Dem Rep. John Conyers Launches “I ♥ ObamaCare” Campaign to Re-Brand “Derogatory” Term…
Mission impossible.
(Politico) — Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) didn’t hold back Monday in rattling off a list of go-to liberal complaints about President Barack Obama, explaining that he just “wants to make him a better president.”“I’m sure he realized what he was getting into,” said Conyers in a Monday morning speech to the National Press Club. “He tried to close Guantanamo; he was against tax cuts to the wealthy; we keep getting a longer and longer list of things that he wanted to do, wished he could do, and of course is having a big problem. The only thing that saves him, of course, is there doesn’t seem to be anybody to run against him next year.”When pressed on his criticism of the president, Conyers said that he supported the president over the alternatives: a GOP field of candidates that he called “not the greatest list to choose from as we go into the next election.”Conyers’ speech was billed as talk on gun control, but his comments ran the gamut: From how he “regrets” the resignation of State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley following his comments about the governments’ handling of Wikileaks suspect Bradley Manning, to his defense the health care overhaul law passed by Democrats last year.Still, Conyers had some praise for the president. While holding up a red-and-white button that read, “I [heart logo] Obamacare,” Conyers said that he was trying to re-brand the derogatory term often used by critics to describe the new law.“We’re trying to take what was intended to be derogatory; we’re now trying to predict that this may be one of his first political victory, but certainly one that the president will be remembered for,” said Conyers.“We not only proclaim that we love Obamacare, but there are 62 reasons for you to at least like it, somewhere among the 62.”
