Conyers Blasts Congress For Inaction Following Tucson Shooting
By Rachel Whitt
Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) denounced Congressional inaction on gun regulation Monday, arguing that the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-Az.) on January 8th should have been a springboard to enact stricter gun laws.
“I had thought that we would at last reach a point where we could come to some improvement on regulating ammunition and magazine clips.” Conyers, the ranking member the House Judiciary Committee said during an appearance at the National Press Club. “But that’s not happened.”
Conyers asserted he will continue to push for more hearings and regulatory action, saying that Congress needs to “move froward, even as modestly as we can, in this setting.” He also said that regulating gun show loopholes and checks on all gun buyers are essential to “make sure they’re not on the prohibited list.”
Conyers is the second most senior member of the House of Representatives and has served as chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the House Judiciary Committee.
