Gabbard meeting with Assad draws disgust from fellow lawmakers

Democrats and Republicans appear equally rattled at Rep. Tulsi Gabbard's decision to meet this month with Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.
“There's a pretty unanimous feeling of shock and disgust,” said a Democratic aide who works on national security issues. “Everybody I've talked to on both sides of the aisle, I think people are just stunned.”

Republicans appeared more willing than Democrats to go on the record in ripping

Chaffetz Says He Wants To Review Trump's DC Hotel Lease

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), the chair of the House Oversight Committee, told reporters on Wednesday that he is looking into the lease for President Donald Trump's Washington, D.C., hotel.
"I did request from the [General Services Administration] the full unredacted contract,” Chaffetz told reporters, according to Politico. “It’ll be interesting to see what they produce and what their take on it is.”

Democratic lawmakers and ethics experts say that Trump has violated his lease for the hotel. Trump leases the building from the federal government, and his lease states that an elected official cannot be involved in or benefit from the hotel, creating a conflict of interest for the new president.

LePage takes final steps to end the state’s role in helping refugees

Refugees take an oath of allegiance on June 17, 2016, at City Hall in Portland as they become naturalized U.S. citizens.

As President Donald Trump weighs sharp restrictions on the resettlement of refugees in the U.S., Gov. Paul LePage’s administration has been taking the final steps to end Maine state government’s small role in the federal refugee resettlement program.

Documents reviewed by the BDN show that the state plans to end its part in the resettlement of refugees, who have fled war or persecution, on March 4. The full responsibility for resettling refugees and overseeing the federal money that comes into the state to pay for refugee services is expected to shift to Catholic Charities Maine, the nonprofit organization that currently works directly with newly arrived refugees.

LePage accuses Maine cities of ‘breaking the laws’ on General Assistance

Gov. Paul LePage speaks to the Maine House of Representatives before swearing them in for the first session of the 128th Legislature at the State House in Augusta, Dec. 7, 2016.

PORTLAND, Maine — Gov. Paul LePage accused Maine’s largest cities of “breaking the laws” by giving certain poor immigrants General Assistance benefits and suggested that his budget proposal to eliminate the $12.1 million welfare program is political payback against Portland and other municipalities that have defied his repeated attempts to exclude such people.
“You follow the rules, there would have been no problems,” LePage said Tuesday on WVOM radio. “But if you try to not follow the rules and you use the money for illegal immigrants, then you get what you pay for.”
Portland officials denied the city has broken any laws, but LePage’s comments lend new insight into why he is looking to eliminate a decades-old welfare program that helps feed and house thousands of poor Mainers, after a year that saw the state run a nearly $93 million budget surplus. In addition to benefits funding, LePage’s proposal to cut General Assistance would eliminate $2.3 million of staffing, administrative and other spending.

Experts: Clinton emails could have compromised CIA names

Hillary Clinton

WASHINGTON (AP) — The names of CIA personnel could have been compromised not only by hackers who may have penetrated Hillary Clinton's private computer server or the State Department system, but also by the release itself of tens of thousands of her emails, security experts say.
Clinton, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, turned over to the State Department 55,000 emails from her private server that were sent or received when she was secretary of state. Some contained information that has since been deemed classified, and those were redacted for public release with notations for the reason of the censorship.

At least 47 of the emails contain the notation "B3 CIA PERS/ORG," which indicates the material referred to CIA personnel or matters related to the agency. And because both Clinton's server and the State Department systems were vulnerable to hacking, the perpetrators could have those original emails, and now the publicly released, redacted versions showing exactly which sections refer to CIA personnel.

His Bold Idea: Move HQ to Detroit to Show 'What the Democratic Party Stands For'

A shake-things-up suggestion surfaces as the Democratic National Committee meets this weekend in Phoenix to hear pitches by candidates for party leader.

Phil Angelides: Detroit "rents are one-third to one-half of what’s charged in D.C."
"I can think of no better way for the DNC’s new chair to signal a fresh start than by setting up the party’s headquarters in Detroit, Michigan—not Washington, D.C.," writes Phil Angelides, a former California party chair and state treasurer.
"A little more heartland and a little less Beltway would be good for the soul and perspective of the Democratic Party," he adds Friday in a Politico Magazine commentary, .

Tennessee lawmaker suggests banning food stamp recipients from buying high-calorie junk, sweets

Tennessee Rep. Sheila Butt introduced a bill Thursday that would ban shoppers from buying junk food with food stamps.

A conservative Tennessee lawmaker wants more government oversight — for food stamp recipients’ diets.
State Rep. Sheila Butt introduced a bill Thursday that would ban shoppers from buying junk food, sweets and other high-calorie snacks with public assistance dollars.
“When you’re receiving taxpayer dollars, it’s not money that you’ve have earned. It’s money that other people have earned and is redistributed to you. Strings come along with that,” the Republican said in a statement announcing her bill.

Women knit pink 'pussyhats' for rally after Trump inauguration

The National Mall in Washington could become a sea of bright pink the day after Donald Trump is inaugurated as U.S. president if the vision of a pair of Los Angeles women is realized.

For two months, Krista Suh and Jayna Zweiman have called on people around the world to make 1.17 million pink "pussyhats" for those attending the Women's March, a rally on Jan. 21 organized with hopes of bringing attention to civil and human rights issues.

The name of the hats comes partly from President-elect Trump's comments in an infamous 2005 tape that came to light during his campaign in which, discussing women, he said: "Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything."

Trump Decries Civil Rights Icon John Lewis as ‘No Action,’ Sparking Backlash

Civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis rankled President-elect Donald Trump when he told NBC News' "Meet the Press" in an exclusive interview on Friday that he does not believe Trump is a "legitimate president." The comment provoked Trump to lash out at the congressman, decrying him on Twitter Saturday as "all talk, talk, talk - no action or results."
Trump's series of tweets criticizing Lewis set off a flurry of reaction on the weekend before Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Several Democrats rallied behind Lewis, a Freedom Rider and top organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, calling him an "American hero" and revered civil rights leader. Republicans stayed mostly silent amid the back and forth — the latest to highlight Trump's willingness to take on anyone, from war heroes to celebrities, whom he believes slighted him.

Young Russian denies she aided election hackers: ‘I never work with douchebags’

Alisa Shevchenko: ‘I am now de-facto blocked from the world’s major information security market.’

Alisa Shevchenko is a talented young Russian hacker, known for working with companies to find vulnerabilities in their systems. She spends her winters in Asia, meditating and training in Thai kickboxing.

She is also, the White House claims, guilty of helping Vladimir Putin interfere in the US election.
Her company was a surprise inclusion on the US sanctions list released last week, alongside top officers in Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency and two well-known criminal hackers. The company “provided the GRU with technical research and development”, according to the fact sheet released by the White House. No further details were given.
In addition to the sanctions, the US expelled 35 Russian diplomats from the country, and said it would take further, non-public measures in response.

Michele Bachmann Can’t Wait for Trump to Reverse Obama’s ‘Evil’ Gay Rights Agenda: LISTEN

Michele Bachmann
Former Rep. Michelle Bachmann sat down with Family Research Council hate group leader Tony Perkins to talk about how excited she is that Donald Trump will soon remove President Obama’s “evil” gay rights agenda, Right Wing Watch reports.
After Perkins asserted that “our government has been perverted to be used to advance an ungodly agenda,” Bachmann unloaded.
Said Bachmann:
“How does the State Department, how does the United States government bless or curse? You brought it up yourself with the State Department, where we’ve seen such evil come out of our State Department, unfortunately, where financial incentives are withheld from countries unless they advance, for instance, the gay agenda.
“In a country that doesn’t believe in the gay agenda but the Obama State Department has said, ‘You have to have a gay pride parade. You have to make sure that you can show us that ministers are marching in these gay pride parades.’ What? The U.S. government is telling another government that you have to have gay pride parades? That’s unbelievable. You won’t get your PEPFAR money, you won’t get your USAID money unless you follow our radical social agenda?
“You know, we laughed about this earlier. We conservatives are always blamed that we want to talk about social issues too much. That’s all the left will talk about, social issues. And yet they are willing to use U.S. tax money, in other words, your listeners’ hard-earned tax money, to beat over the head other nations to come into conformity with lifestyles and behaviors that we know can be detrimental to people and that don’t advance the American cause.”
