LePage takes final steps to end the state’s role in helping refugees

Refugees take an oath of allegiance on June 17, 2016, at City Hall in Portland as they become naturalized U.S. citizens.

As President Donald Trump weighs sharp restrictions on the resettlement of refugees in the U.S., Gov. Paul LePage’s administration has been taking the final steps to end Maine state government’s small role in the federal refugee resettlement program.

Documents reviewed by the BDN show that the state plans to end its part in the resettlement of refugees, who have fled war or persecution, on March 4. The full responsibility for resettling refugees and overseeing the federal money that comes into the state to pay for refugee services is expected to shift to Catholic Charities Maine, the nonprofit organization that currently works directly with newly arrived refugees.

LePage accuses Maine cities of ‘breaking the laws’ on General Assistance

Gov. Paul LePage speaks to the Maine House of Representatives before swearing them in for the first session of the 128th Legislature at the State House in Augusta, Dec. 7, 2016.

PORTLAND, Maine — Gov. Paul LePage accused Maine’s largest cities of “breaking the laws” by giving certain poor immigrants General Assistance benefits and suggested that his budget proposal to eliminate the $12.1 million welfare program is political payback against Portland and other municipalities that have defied his repeated attempts to exclude such people.
“You follow the rules, there would have been no problems,” LePage said Tuesday on WVOM radio. “But if you try to not follow the rules and you use the money for illegal immigrants, then you get what you pay for.”
Portland officials denied the city has broken any laws, but LePage’s comments lend new insight into why he is looking to eliminate a decades-old welfare program that helps feed and house thousands of poor Mainers, after a year that saw the state run a nearly $93 million budget surplus. In addition to benefits funding, LePage’s proposal to cut General Assistance would eliminate $2.3 million of staffing, administrative and other spending.

This book was LePage’s Christmas gift to Maine lawmakers

AUGUSTA (BDN) -- Lawmakers got a Christmas present from Gov. Paul LePage: A pamphlet called “Understanding and Appreciating the Value of Money.”

LePage spokesman Peter Steele said the governor discovered the book when it was sent to him by its author, who wrote it originally for his granddaughter.

Gov. LePage orders Department of Labor not to enforce minimum wage law

Gov. LePage orders Department of Labor not to enforce minimum wage law

In a media statement released on Wednesday, Maine Governor Paul LePage announced that his administration will refuse to enforce a portion of the minimum wage law passed by referendum in November. According to the announcement, the Maine Department of Labor “will not bring enforcement actions against any employer who fails to comply” with an increase from $3.75 to $5 an hour in the base wage paid to workers, like restaurant servers, who also receive tips.
These employers would still be in violation of state law during the period of non-enforcement in January and could face civil penalties, as LePage can’t unilaterally roll back the minimum wage increase, which passed by a double-digit margin.
The governor’s actions earned quick condemnation from advocates for raising the minimum wage and Democratic leaders.

LePage says Mainers didn’t understand referendum questions

FILE- In this June 7, 2016, file photo, Maine Gov. Paul LePage attends an opioid abuse conference in Boston. LePage is being accused again of making racially insensitive comments, this time by saying photos he's collected in a binder of drug dealers arrested in the state show more than 90 percent of them are black or Hispanic. AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Republican Gov. Paul LePage says he will propose slashing the income tax rate to lessen the impact of a new income surtax and minimum wage hike that Mainers approved this month.
The idea will be in LePage’s budget proposal due in January. In a letter to legislators, LePage said Maine voters didn’t understand the specifics of ballot questions they approved to raise the minimum wage and directly fund schools through a new surtax on individual Maine taxable income above $200,000.
LePage said the tax would make Maine’s income tax the second highest in the nation, and claimed the wage hike would increase prices and slash restaurant servers’ pay.
LePage proposes removing the income tax on pensions, reduce the cost of medications and make it harder to foreclose on elderly homeowners.

Gov. LePage says Maine will no longer participate in refugee program

lepage.PNG

PORTLAND (WGME) – Governor Paul LePage says he's making big changes to how Maine participates in the federal refugee resettlement program.
Friday afternoon, when the governor was in the CBS 13 studio, he told our Jon Chrisos the state would stop helping resettle refugees here in Maine.
He's sent a letter to the president, ending the state's participation in the program.
It's a controversial move, but he says he's just lost confidence in the federal government's ability to safely and responsibly run the refugee program.

Paul LePage's Binders Full of White People

The Maine governor said blacks and Hispanics from out of state were to blame for drug problems, but his own files show mostly white Mainers being arrested for narcotics.

In August, Governor Paul LePage of Maine launched a diatribe at a man who’d asked him about a spate of drug problems in the state.

“I don’t ask them to come to Maine and sell their poison, but they come and I will tell you that 90-plus percent of those pictures in my book, and it’s a three-ringed binder, are black and Hispanic people from Waterbury, Connecticut, the Bronx and Brooklyn,” he said.

But when reporters asked to see the binder, LePage refused. It turns out he may have been right to be wary: Its contents, released Monday after an open-records request, showed that the Republican badly misstated its contents, blaming people of color from out of state when most of those included are white Mainers.

City of Portland has no plans to remove graffiti of Gov. Paul LePage in Ku Klux Klan hood

Knowing Maine Gov. Paul LePage’s previous response to be labeled a racist, he probably won’t like this.
The city of Portland says it has no plans to remove a new mural depicting the combative Republican governor in a Ku Klux Klan hood and cloak, along with the words “racist,” “homophobe,” and “moron.”
The graffiti, which was first spotted late last week, is painted across the side of a public wall along Portland’s Eastern Promenade Trail, a popular walking trail. The words “Dump LePage” are spelled out in giant block letters, punctuated with the depiction of the governor in KKK garb.

Maine Dems call out Republicans for not taking action against Gov. LePage's threats

Dear Friend,

At a press conference last night, House Republican Leader Ken Fredette said that his caucus had no interest in taking action to hold Governor LePage accountable for his threat against a sitting lawmaker or for his racist and homophobic remarks.

We need your help. Below are phone numbers for every Republican in the Legislature. Please call every single one to tell them that Maine won't stand for inaction and that Governor LePage must resign. Please note these numbers are all listed on the Legislature's website, so we are not sharing contact information that is not already public.

Maine continues to make headlines in the national news. We have a historic opportunity to show the country that our state will loudly reject bigotry and hate. Please help us do that.

In solidarity,
Phil Bartlett, Chair
