Conyers Encourages Detroit and the Nation to Reflect on the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

(DETROIT) –  Today, Representative John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) released a statement encouraging the city of Detroit and the Nation to reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in recognition of the upcoming observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 16, 2012.

“I fought to make Martin Luther King, Jr. Day a national holiday because America needs to not only honor Dr. King’s memory but also to reflect on his legacy.  His legacy encourages us to act for social and economic justices for all, but to also have the courage to do so in nonviolent ways.  I am proud to have worked on making the day of Dr. King’s birth a national holiday.  Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is not only a reminder of how far the Nation has come, but also a reminder of how far we must go to fully realize his dream of social equality and economic justice for all.”
