Obama administration orders ND pipeline construction to stop

The Obama administration said it would not authorize construction on a critical stretch of the Dakota Access pipeline, handing a significant victory to the Indian tribe fighting the project the same day the group lost a court battle.

The administration said construction would halt until it can do more environmental assessments.

The Department of Justice, the Army and the Interior Department jointly announced that construction would pause on the pipeline near North Dakota's Lake Oahe, a major water source on the Missouri River for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. The agencies will now decide whether they need to reconsider permitting decisions for the pipeline under the National Environmental Policy Act.

Breaking: Arrest Warrant Issued For Amy Goodman in North Dakota After Covering Pipeline Protest

An arrest warrant has been issued in North Dakota for Democracy Now! host and executive producer Amy Goodman. Goodman was charged with criminal trespassing, a misdemeanor offense. A team from Democracy Now! was in North Dakota last week to cover the Native American-led protests against the Dakota Access pipeline.

On Sept. 3, Democracy Now! filmed security guards working for the Dakota Access pipeline company using dogs and pepper spray to attack protesters. Democracy Now’sreport went viral online and was re-broadcast on many outlets including CBS and MSNBC.

“This is unacceptable violation of freedom of the press," said Amy Goodman in a statement. "I was doing my job by covering pipeline guards unleashing dogs and pepper spray on Native American protesters.”

Ammon Bundy's lawyer quotes from Western film, mocks federal prosecutors in last-minute legal motion

Five days before jury selection is set to begin, Ammon Bundy's lawyer mocked federal prosecutors for their concise rejection of his last-minute efforts to convince the court to throw out the indictment based on his client's continued challenges of federal control of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge and the court's authority.

On Thursday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Ethan Knight wrote, "This Court has jurisdiction ... because this is a case involving federal criminal charges.''

He added, "Moreover, Bundy's adverse possession theory is fatally flawed because it does not apply to the federal government.''

GOP Platform Proposes To Get Rid Of National Parks And National Forests

The Republican platform committee met this week to draft the document that defines the party’s official principles and policies. Along with provisions on pornography and LGBT “conversion therapy” is an amendment calling for the indiscriminate and immediate disposal of national public lands.

The inclusion of this provision in the Republican Party’s platform reflects the growing influence of and ideological alliance between several anti-park members of the GOP and anti-government extremists, led by Cliven Bundy, who dispute the federal government’s authority over national public lands.

“Congress shall immediately pass universal legislation providing a timely and orderly mechanism requiring the federal government to convey certain federally controlled public lands to the states,” reads the adopted language. “We call upon all national and state leaders and representatives to exert their utmost power and influence to urge the transfer of those lands identified.”

The provision calls for an immediate full-scale disposal of “certain” public lands, without defining which lands it would apply to, leaving national parks, wilderness areas, wildlife refuges, and national forests apparently up for grabs and vulnerable to development, privatization, or transfer to state ownership.

Trump’s ‘African-American’ is an anti-government GOP candidate who calls him ‘Uncle Donald’

The black supporter who was highlighted by Donald Trump during a rally on Friday identified himself as a Republican congressional candidate who took no offense to the real estate mogul calling him “my African-American.”

“To give the black folk the time of the day, I was happy,” Gregory Cheadle told the Redding Record Searchlight following the encounter. According to Cheadle, the vast majority of the audience for Trump’s speech was white.

The presumptive Republican nominee pointed to Cheadle during the event, saying, “Look at my African-American over here. Look at him. Are you the greatest? You know what I’m talking about?” before relaying an anecdote about another black supporter who punched a protester — who Trump said was dressed like a Ku Klux Klan member — at a previous event.

The comment quickly provoked another round of criticism toward Trump. But Cheadle said he was glad for the attention given that politicians traditionally ignore black communities. He also said that he talked to Trump after the event.

“I was at the point he was about to leave and I called out, ‘Uncle Donald, Uncle Donald,'” Cheadle said. “He recognized me as the guy he had called out.”

Cheadle was much more critical of government in February, when he appeared at a rally honoring Oregon militant LaVoy Finicum, who was part of the group led by Ammon Bundy that seized the Malheur National Wildlife Reserve in Oregon. Finicum was shot and killed after reaching for a gun in his pocket during a confrontation with federal agents, though he has become the focus of conspiracy theories arguing otherwise.

Cliven Bundy suing Obama, Nevada officials

Cliven Bundy, the Nevada rancher who led an armed standoff over grazing fees on federal lands, is suing President Obama and Nevada officials in hopes of getting charges against him dismissed.

Bundy’s lawyer will file the complaint Tuesday against Obama; Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid(D-Nev.); his son, former Clark County Commission Chairman Rory Reid and U.S. District Court Judge Gloria Navarro.

Bundy supporters seethe over arrest of militant with illegal machine gun: They’re playing with a ‘time bomb’

Authorities have arrested yet another member of the armed militant group that occupied the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon early this year, the Oregonian reports.

Michael Emry, who describes himself as a reporter who “embedded” himself with the Bundy-led militia during the 41-day stand-off, was arrested Friday on federal weapons charges.

Jake Edward Ryan, the 27-year-old Montana man who has been sought by federal authorities for more than two weeks on an indictment stemming from the takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, was found hiding in a stranger's shed in Clark County Tuesday afternoon.

Gabriel said it appeared from Facebook postings that Ryan's family had tried to harbor him, and had hired an attorney for him.

Utah ranchers vow to continue Bundy war against feds despite arrests of Oregon militants

On  23 January, a group of Utah ranchers gathered in Cedar City and made a pledge: they signed notices of “withdrawal of consent” to be governed – a statement rejecting the authority of the federal agencies that regulate grazing and charge fees to have livestock use public lands.

The ranchers were following in the footsteps of Arizona rancher LaVoy Finicum, who at the time was a leader of a land-use protest at an Oregon wildlife refuge and who had publicly refused to pay for grazing rights.

Armed hate group met at Texas mosque protest by gun-toting worshipers

An  anti-Muslim hate group planned an armed protest at an African-American mosque in Texas — but it didn’t go as planned.

The group, the Bureau of American Islamic Relations, or BAIR, has made it a habit in the past to show up at mosques with firearms and intimidate worshipers. In November, armed protesters stalked Muslims in Irving. In December, they again stalked Muslims at the Islamic Association of North Texas.

Law enforcement and state officials continue to receive death threats from people angered over the shooting of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge occupier Robert “LaVoy” Finicum.

“Kill cops because they are cops, if for no other reason,” one man believed to be from Oregon wrote on social media. “Just walk up asking for directions and shoot them in the [expletive] face.”

When Western county commissioners wanted to start a nonprofit dedicated to taking over federal lands, they turned to a well-heeled 92-year-old businessman.

Bert Smith and his wife, Kathy, cut a $35,000 check. The American Lands Council was born in 2012.

"I don't know how much money they've put into it over the years, but a lot," said Demar Dahl, an Elko County, Nev., commissioner and the organization's co-founder and current board member.

Bert Smith, now 95, styles himself "Mr. Sagebrush Rebellion" and calls jailed Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy a "hero." The Ogden, Utah, resident has quietly bankrolled a bevy of groups challenging the federal government's ownership of roughly 640 million acres of Western lands.

Judge Keeps Cliven Bundy in Jail, Citing a History of Resistance

A federal judge on Thursday refused to release Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, saying his history of ignoring court orders makes it unlikely he would return to court.

Bundy, 69, is accused of leading a 2014 armed standoff with federal agents who seized his cattle after two decades of illegally grazing them on public land and refusing to pay grazing fees.
