The deputy national security adviser for strategy, one of the few White House aides with extensive experience in a past Republican administration, has taken on a large list of responsibilities touching on foreign and domestic policy.

Besides serving as a deputy to national security adviser H.R. McMaster, Powell was asked by senior adviser Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, to serve in a new office tasked with using private-sector ideas to overhaul the federal government.

Powell, who speaks Arabic and moved to the United States from Egypt at the age of 4, is also advising President Trump and his daughter Ivanka on economic initiatives.

DeVos: Critics want to ‘make my life a living hell’

In her first full week as U.S. education secretary, Betsy DeVos wasted no time in getting to work to try to explain her vision for education and the U.S. Education Department — and to go after her critics, saying they want to make her life “a living hell.” She also said she has identified people in the department who want her to fail, but vowed not to let them.

Her nomination by President Trump sparked an unprecedented backlash, and she was confirmed on Feb. 7 in the Senate only after Vice President Pence cast the first-ever vote to break a tie for a Cabinet nominee. Her backers see her as a champion of school choice and alternatives to traditional public schools, while opponents say her decades of advocacy work show that she wants to privatize the public education system.

Federal Bureau of Prisons Renews Private Prison Contract

Back in the United States, the Federal Bureau of Prisons has extended one of its contracts with the for-profit prison company CoreCivic, formerly known as Corrections Corporation of America. This comes despite the fact the Justice Department announced in August the bureau would phase out its contracts with private prison companies, after finding higher rates of violence, abuse and neglect in these facilities.

Private prison stocks collapse after Justice Department promises to phase them out

The Justice Department on Thursday announced that it will end the use of private prisons, which currently house more than 22,000 federal prisoners, or about 12 percent of the total federal prison population.

These prisons had become increasingly controversial in the past several years. A DOJ Inspector General's report recently found that these prisons were on average less safe and secure than government-run prisons. Mother Jones magazine recently published a searing, 35,000-word expose on abuses at one private prison in Louisiana.

Criminal justice reformers also raised concerns that private prisons have a profit motive to put more people behind bars. The companies that own these prisons, like the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA)and the GEO Group, stand to make more money if the prison population grows. Many private prison contracts mandate a minimum occupancy rate -- often 90 or even 100 percent. In some cases, the government must pay for 100-percent capacity regardless of how many beds are filled.

Hillary election win could raise uncertainty over future of Clinton Foundation

The Clinton Foundation has caused political headaches for its namesakes — and it’s unclear what they’ll do with their charitable organization if they return to the White House.

Some say the multibillion-dollar foundation should be disbanded to avoid possible conflicts of interest. Others say the foundation does too much good work around the globe and should continue under new leadership.

Hillary Clinton’s team is facing renewed questions about conflicts of interest after new emails released last week revealed that Clinton Foundation staffers asked top State Department officials to provide foundation donors access to other senior government employees.

The United States Revokes Scientology’s Tax-Exempt Status

This article is false and has been passed around the net. 

In a unanimous decision by the Supreme Court today, the eight justices ruled in favor of revoking the Church of Scientology’s tax-exempt status in the United States. Under the ruling, Scientology will still be able to operate as a business but no longer as a non-profit religious organization.
