LePage says Mainers didn’t understand referendum questions

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Republican Gov. Paul LePage says he will propose slashing the income tax rate to lessen the impact of a new income surtax and minimum wage hike that Mainers approved this month.

The idea will be in LePage’s budget proposal due in January. In a letter to legislators, LePage said Maine voters didn’t understand the specifics of ballot questions they approved to raise the minimum wage and directly fund schools through a new surtax on individual Maine taxable income above $200,000.

LePage said the tax would make Maine’s income tax the second highest in the nation, and claimed the wage hike would increase prices and slash restaurant servers’ pay.

LePage proposes removing the income tax on pensions, reduce the cost of medications and make it harder to foreclose on elderly homeowners.

Cornyn: Clinton duped Congress during confirmation

Senate Republican Whip John Cornyn (Texas) said Hillary Clinton misled lawmakers eight years ago when questions about the Clinton Foundation loomed over her nomination to head the State Department. 

Cornyn held up her nomination because of concerns over potential conflicts of interest posed by the foundation’s fundraising activities. He finally relented and voted for her after Clinton promised him that safeguards would be followed.

In the wake of various reports detailing instances where the foundation did not fully comply with transparency requirements, Cornyn now says he would have voted against her had he known what was to come.

Washington Republican ‘Representative Beefcake’ resigns over vote fraud

State officials in Washington are trying to determine whether a now-former state Representative owes them any of the money he earned as a state lawmaker.

According to the Greenfield Reporter, state Rep. Mike Hope (R) — a former b-movie actor who bills himself as “Representative Beefcake” because of his ripped physique — stepped down after it was revealed that he was registered to vote in both Ohio and Washington.

Hope, who had previously announced that he would not be running for reelection after his third term, had intended to settle in Ohio and registered to vote there in 2013. The lawmaker, who represents the 44th Legislative District does not have a home in his Washington district, living with his brother in Snohomish.

According to the Heraldnet, Democratic activist Mark Hintz, contacted the office of Barbara Baker, chief clerk of the House of Representatives, about Hope’s dual voting registration.

State law requires an elected official to remain a registered voter in the district in which they serve. If they are not a registered voter, they must be immediately removed from office.

Now officials are looking into whether Hope must reimburse that state for his earnings as a legislator.

“I think we did get duped by him and should have to pay it back,” Hintz, who is chairman of the 44th Legislative District Democrats, said. “He sold his house, registered in Ohio and continued to take taxpayers’ money to represent people in Washington while living in Ohio. That’s unconscionable.”

In a letter to Gov. Jay Inslee, Hope wrote, “It has been an honor to serve in the Washington State House of Representatives. It has also been an honor to serve during your term. However, I can no longer serve the remainder of my legislative term.”

Woman Voter Says Women Shouldn't Be Allowed to Vote

Janis Lane, the lady leader of the Central Mississippi Tea Party thinks that women shouldn't be allowed to cast a ballot this (or any) election. In something that's akin to hamsters eating their young, Lane has turned on her own kind, and is practicing a brand of self-hatred that you just don't see many people admitting to these days. Well, unless you're in the tea party, and then pretty much all you do is try to make things harder for yourself and people like you. Ahhh, it's all coming together.

There is nothing worse than a bunch of mean, hateful women," she says. "They are diabolical in how than can skewer a person. I do not see that in men."

GOP Defends Maine’s Gay-Baiting Ad On Same-Day Voter Registration

As voters in Maine consider a ballot initiative to strike down a narrowly-passed lawthat eliminated election day voter registration in the state, opponents of same-day registration are running an ad in 25 community papers that singles out a gay rights group’s involvement in the effort. The ad implies that same-day registration would help the LGBT equality organization — EqualityMaine — push through a “gay” agenda and hopes to convince homophobic voters to maintain the new election restrictions:

Maine’s Republican Party Chairman Charlie Webster is defending the tone of the ad, arguing that it was designed to “educate” the public about EqualityMaine, “one of the advocacy groups involved in the coalition that wants to retain the state’s 38-year-old EDR law.” “We’ve talked about the different left-of-center groups that are supporting this referendum and questioned why they’re doing that,” Webster said. “That’s all this is.”

Meanwhile, a recent poll from Public Policy Polling (PPP) found that support for EqualityMaine’s “agenda” — which includes marriage equality — is increasing among independents in Maine. Fifty-one percent of voters say they support marriage equality, including 53 percent of independents. In 2009, EqualityMaine lost its campaign to preserve marriage equality when a referendum to overturn same-sex marriage passed by a vote of 53 percent to 47 percent.
