Black Detroit officials outraged at 'Sambo Awards'
Detroit — Two black public officials say they’re outraged after they were given “Sambo Awards” last week at a dinner honoring former Detroit mayor Coleman Young.
Detroit Water and Sewerage Department director Gary Brown and police chief James Craig were given the top two “Sambo Awards” at a dinner Thursday hosted by the “Call 'Em Out Coalition” and its president, African-American activist Agnes Hitchcock.
Hitchcock, who attracted national media attention in 2007 when she was arrested and fined for throwing grapes at Detroit school board members, insists the annual awards are meant to shed light on policies that harm the city’s black community.
Brown and Craig say the awards are racially offensive.

Coast Guard lieutenant accused of murder plot 'on a scale rarely seen in this country'
A Coast Guard lieutenant arrested earlier this week on drug and gun charges was planning to commit domestic terrorism, according to a court filing from the U.S. District Court in Maryland.
In a motion filed Tuesday, U.S. attorneys said Christopher Hasson, a lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard who has served at the service’s headquarters in Washington since 2016, had a hit list of targets, a cache of guns and a series of communications with white supremacists. The first sentence in the motion imploring the court to detain Hasson pending trial: “The defendant intends to murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country.”

Report: Trump leaning towards nominating John James for UN ambassador post
WASHINGTON - President Trump is leaning towards nominating former Michigan U.S. Senate candidate John James as United Nations ambassador.
Politico reports the White House is in discussions with James about the vacant post.
James, 37, is a businessman and Iraq War veteran who ran against Sen. Debbie Stabenow in the 2018 election.
State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert announced Saturday she had withdrawn from consideration as UN ambassador, keeping the position open.
The State Department said Saturday that Trump will make an announcement about a new nominee soon.
Trump, who sounded out the idea of selecting James with trusted advisers around Mar-a-Lago over the weekend, is "very impressed by him ... and sees him as a rising star," the source said.
James had previously interviewed with Trump for a role in the administration and was seen as a top prospect for the UN job when the position was offered to Nauert.
