Howard Dean Just Accused Donald Trump of Being on Cocaine During the Debate

So far in this debate, Donald Trump has sniffled approximately 12,000 times, sipped a lot of water, and argued loudly with the lady next to him. On Twitter, Howard Dean says what we’re all thinking—cocaine?

Last Rites for Rick Perry's Presidential Campaign After GOP Debate

Last Rites for Rick Perry's Presidential Campaign After GOP Debate

On Wednesday night we witnessed a political suicide live on national television.
Rick Perry is now the official Charlie Brown of presidential candidates. He reminds me of the kid who got held back in high school. Even though he’s been there longer than the rest of the class (or governor for 10 years), he still doesn’t know the answers.
It’s one thing to not be able to tick off all of Mitt Romney’s 59-point economic plan. Or even a 10-point plan. But when you can’t get past two in a three-point plan, you’re done. Disqualified.
Perry is now a dead man walking. He’ll go through the motions to save face, but he won’t get a single new voter. And he will quickly lose the ones he had. Once they’re laughing at you, you’re finished. Perry supporters Wednesday night were running out in the dark and pulling out yard signs.
Romney had another good night. Cain deflected and treaded water. Gingrich was confident and strong. Huntsman was OK but largely ignored. Santorum was too self-focused. Bachmann exhibited strong message discipline but never seemed to get past her talking points. Ron Paul was predictable.
And points to the sponsors and the panel. The debate was substantive and full of relevant and tough questions.
But, there’s only one story from Wednesday night. Last rites for Rick Perry. There will be no resurrection. No second act. He will join the political hall of fame of presidential losers from Texas like John Connally and Phil Gramm, who started with bang and went out with a whimper and no delegates.

Republican Debate Audience Boos Gay Soldier Stephen Hill After DADT Repeal Question

Republican Debate Audience Boos Gay Soldier Stephen Hill After DADT Repeal Question

During the Republican debate Thursday night, host Megyn Kelly dropped a YouTube clip on Rick Santorum: a question from Stephen Hill, a soldier in Iraq who, up until this week, had to "lie about who [he] was" in order to serve in the army.
Santorum provided Hill no succor, saying that the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" injected "social engineering" into the military.
SANTORUM: I would say any type of sexual activity has absolutely no place in the military. The fact they are making a point to include it as a provision within the military that we are going to recognize a group of people and give them a special privilege to, and removing don't ask don’t tell. I think tries to inject social policy into the military. And the military's job is to do one thing: to defend our country...
KELLY: What would you do with soldiers like Stephen Hill?
SANTORUM: What we are doing is playing social experimentation with our military right now. That’s tragic. I would just say that going forward we would reinstitute that policy if Rick Santorum was president. That policy would be re-instituted as far as people in, I would not throw them out because that would be unfair to them because of the policy of this administration. But we would move forward in conformity with what was happening in the past. Which was- sex is not an issue. It should not be an issue. Leave it alone. Keep it to yourself whether you are heterosexual or homosexual.
Of course, the big news of the exchange will once again be about an audience reaction. After Fox cut back from the clip of Hill, several members of the audience were heard, in a shocking demonstration of disrespect for one of our soldiers, lustily booing him. Very sad.
Sidenote: Fred Karger responded to that exchange by telling the Huffington Post, "Santorum is truly nuts. Just Google him. Congress repealed DADT. Federal court found it unconstitutional."
UPDATE: After the debate, Talking Points Memo reporter Evan McMorris-Santoro caught up with Jon Huntsman. When asked about the incident, Huntsman said the booing was "unfortunate." McMorris-Santoro also talked to a Perry representative, who used similar language, calling it "very unfortunate."

Lawrence O’Donnell Offers To Moderate Debate Between Michele Bachmann And 10th Grader

Lawrence O’Donnell Offers To Moderate Debate Between Michele Bachmann And 10th Grader

Earlier this month, high school sophomore Amy Myers challenged Rep. Michele Bachmann to a debate on American history, after the latter made several factual errors in referencing it. Myers received threats and insults for it, but nonetheless agreed to appear with Lawrence O’Donnell last night and explain her cause. O’Donnell, on his part, offered to moderate the debate along with any co-moderator Rep. Bachmann would like.
O’Donnell opened the segment by noting that Bachmann had been invited to debate Myers on The Last Word, but declined. Or, rather, she hadn’t responded, because “I didn’t even think about this til about four o’clock this afternoon” and there was no time to put anything together by then. O’Donnell then turned to Myers, whose pursuit he considered somewhat unfair. “I absolutely refuse to debate you on US history because you just told me that, as a tenth grader, you are taking AP US History… you kids today,” he joked. He then asked whether it was a fair match to pit herself against Rep. Bachmann: “Michele Bachmann hasn’t studied US history in, I don’t know, three or four decades.” Myers replied that she believed it was fair to expect public servants to understand “basic civil matters and the Constitution,” and had been shocked that Rep. Bachmann couldn’t keep her facts straight.
Myers also confessed a desire to run for office, but had a separate passion– veterinary care. “Plenty of people have had real careers,” O’Donnell noted, before running for office, and he recommended it to keep from acquiring a certain “tunnel vision” about the world. He also offered to host the debate between Myers and Bachmann along with any co-moderator of Bachmann’s choosing, which is giving Rep. Bachmann an incredible amount of power. Which begs the question: which sympathetic-to-Bachmann political personality would you choose to sit next to O’Donnell in a debate if you were Bachmann? I can’t decide between Sarah Palin and Donald Trump.
