Ruth Bader Ginsburg Walked All Over Texas' Restrictive Abortion Law

Ginsburg and her female colleagues were far from convinced. When Keller pointed to the biggest, most populous cities in the great state of Texas -- where clinics are complying with the law -- as proof that the procedure would remain available elsewhere if the court upheld the law, Ginsburg took him to task for what is likely the state's weakest argument.

"Well, how many women are located over 100 miles from the nearest clinic?" she asked.

That's when the slow and painful unraveling of Keller began. He conceded that "25 percent" of women -- by which he meant roughly 1.5 million -- do. To him that was no harm, no foul. He reasoned that some women could always go to nearby New Mexico, which doesn't have the same restrictions on abortion clinics as Texas.

"That's odd that you point to the New Mexico facility," Ginsburg shot back. "If your argument is right, then New Mexico is not an available way out for Texas, because Texas says to protect our women, we need these things." Instead, she said, the state proposed to "send them off" to New Mexico, whose clinics are not subject to any of Texas' health-conscious regulations.

Republican Maine state Representative Lawrence Lockman is under fire for comments he’s made in the media regarding rape, abortion, and homosexuality.

An investigation by Mike Tipping, an activist with Maine People’s Alliance, found numerous offensive comments made by the Republican in various newspaper interviews.

Perhaps the most inflammatory was a press statement from 1995 in which Lockman says “If a woman has (the right to an abortion), why shouldn’t a man be free to use his superior strength to force himself on a woman? At least the rapist’s pursuit of sexual freedom doesn’t (in most cases) result in anyone’s death.”

That wasn’t all.

According to the report, Lockman once implied that the HIV virus can be spread through mosquitoes and bed sheets. Lockman also asserted that liberals helped exacerbate the AIDS epidemic by assuring “the public that the practice of sodomy is a legitimate alternative lifestyle, rather than a perverted and depraved crime against humanity.”

In a letter to Bangor News, Lockman once wrote “Clearly the practice of sodomy is learned behavior, and those addicted to this form of biologically-insane sex are at high risk for all manner of serious medical problems.”

Lockman also spoke out against HIV infected students attending school, saying “It’s peculiar that the government is telling health care workers that surfaces contaminated with bodily fluids should be thoroughly disinfected, but at the same time they are telling us that toilet seats have some magical property that they are able to resist viruses.”

He also tried to alert people to a “secret gay affirmative action plan,” saying “You can bet the rent money they will demand that employers set up goals and timetables to achieve 10 percent homosexual representation in the workforce and in government contracts.”

Ben Grant, the chairman of the Maine Democratic Party, called for Lockman to resign in light of these statements, calling them “hateful, vicious, and offensive.” Grant also called Lockman “disturbed individual who holds some of the most abhorrent beliefs ever heard from a public official in Maine.”

Lockman has refused to respond to direct questions but released a statement, saying “I have always been passionate about my beliefs, and years ago I said things that I regret. I hold no animosity toward anyone by virtue of their gender or sexual orientation, and today I am focused on ensuring freedom and economic prosperity for all Mainers.”

Bachmann reveals miscarriage to explain abortion stance

GOP presidential candidate GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann revealed she once had a "devastating" miscarriage, which ultimately helped shape her views on abortion.

The Minnesota congresswoman disclosed the miscarriage Wednesday night at a town hall meeting in South Carolina, according to CNN and Politico, in response to a question about abortion.

"After our second was born, we became pregnant with a third baby," Bachmann said, referring to her husband, Marcus. "It was an unexpected baby, but of course we were delighted to have this child. The child was coming along and we ended up losing our child. And it was devastating to both of us, as you can imagine if any of you have lost a child."

Bachmann said the experience "changed us forever," leading her and her husband to help raise 23 foster children along with five biological children. She frequently discusses her children on the campaign trail, such as when she introduced herself to the nation during the first GOP presidential debate in New Hampshire.

"We made a commitment that no matter how many children were brought into our life, we would receive them because we are committed to life," Bachmann told the South Carolina audience.

Bachmann recently signed an anti-abortion pledge by the Susan B. Anthony List, which states that candidates will appoint judges and Cabinet officials who are against abortion, sign legislation banning abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, and cut off taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood.

The pledge was also signed by GOP presidential hopefuls Tim Pawlenty, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul. Bachmann criticized rival Mitt Romney for not signing the pledge.

Romney, who once supported abortion rights but now does not, has said the pledge would have unintended consequences.

GOP Pushes Through Attack on Women

Conyers: H.R. 3 Is a Profound Government Intrusion on Women’s 
Private Health Care Decisions

(Washington)—Today, the Republican House Majority voted to limit women’s access to affordable health care, by a vote of 251-175. On the House Floor, Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) led the Democrats in the debate against H.R. 3, the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortions Act,” denouncing the bill as a government intrusion on women’s private health care decisions.

Below is an excerpt of Mr. Conyers’ floor speech:

H.R. 3 is an attack on women and will undermine women’s access to safe, legal, and comprehensive health care.

This legislation reaches far beyond federal funding. It subjects women to profound government intrusion, restricts women’s access to health care, and targets small businesses for disparate treatment under the tax code.

H.R. 3 will punish women for their private health care decisions and will subject them to profound government intrusion. While the bill contains exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the mother, women will be required to PROVE these exceptions to the IRS. Under current law, a woman need not prove the necessity or reason behind a medical procedure to the IRS. However, under H.R. 3, women will be subjected to IRS audits to substantiate the reasons for this very personal health care decision.

As if suffering a brutal sexual assault that resulted in pregnancy were not enough, now a woman will need to prove this trauma to the IRS.

I would also note that the Majority has not been entirely forthcoming about the so called rape exception. The term “forcible rape” was changed to “rape” during the committee mark up. However, the Majority stated in the accompanying legislative report that the rape exception DOES NOT include statutory rape.

This means that if the Majority gets their way a 12 year-old girl who is impregnated by a 52 year old sexual predator she meets on the internet would not be included in the rape exception.

The goal of H.R. 3 is to make it impossible to obtain abortion services even when paid for with purely private, non-Federal funds. H.R. 3 seeks to achieve this by, among other things, imposing an unprecedented tax penalty on individuals and businesses who use their own money to pay for abortion or to purchase insurance that would cover abortion.

While the bill's sponsors claim that sections of the bill will preserve the right to use one's own funds to contract for and purchase insurance that covers abortion, section 303(1) would make it impossible for many women, families, and businesses to do so.

Finally, H.R. 3 subjects small businesses to disparate treatment under the tax laws. It includes a devastating attack on small businesses, just when we are on the brink of economic recovery.

H.R. 3 denies small employers the ability to use tax credits created by the Affordable Care Act if health coverage provided to employees includes abortion services, but contains no similar restrictions on medium and large businesses. The burden is placed only on the smallest employers.

Just this week, the President of the South Carolina Small Business Chamber of Commerce wrote in The Hill newspaper that, "H.R. 3 is simply a slap in the face to the millions of small businesses now offering health insurance to employees and eligible for the new tax credits."

Rather than addressing the immediate and pressing needs of our country, we are engaged today in the charade of forcing members to vote on legislation that has already been pronounced dead on arrival.

There is little chance that the Senate will consider this bill. And so, I can only conclude that the Majority is here today to attack women and their private health care decisions merely for sport.
