U.S. Chamber of Commerce says Glenn Beck’s appeal crashed servers

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce says it received an "outpouring of support" that crashed its servers Thursday morning after conservative host Glenn Beck pledged $10,000 on the air to the organization and urged his listeners to donate what they can afford.

"Let's break all records," Beck said. "Let's show these people that we actually believe in something different from what Barack Obama and Joe Biden are saying, that we don't think the Chamber of Commerce is all of a sudden some KGB agent."

The Obama administration has recently questioned funding sources for the Chamber of Commerce, a business lobbying group that is spending tens of millions of dollars on advocacy ads critical of Democratic policies and candidates. ThinkProgress, a liberal blog run by the Center for American Progress Action Fund,has alleged that foreign funding is paying for political ads.

So how effective was Beck?

"We don't discuss membership or contributions but I can say that there was an outpouring of support today," Tita Freeman, the chamber's vice president of communications, said in a statement. "So much so that the Chamber's server crashed this morning. I think this is a sign of support for the Chamber's pro-business policies and our continued focus on one issue: job creation."

Beck isn't the only person affiliated with Fox News to help out the chamber this election cycle. Rupert Murdoch, owner of Fox parent News Corp., donated $1 million over the summer.

On Monday, Fox News host Glenn Beck criticized unemployed activists who protested on Wall Street to demand an extension of unemployment benefits beyond the 99 weeks available in some states, specifically calling out one Connie Kaplan.

"Ninety-niner Connie Kaplan asked, 'Are you going to tell us, Mr. President and Congress, that our lives are not worth saving?'" Beck said. "Connie, here's an idea. I'll save your life. Don't spend your remaining money on travel to get to a protest. Go out and get a job. You may not want the job. Work at McDonald's. Work two jobs."

Kaplan told HuffPost she was "appalled" by Beck's suggestion that she'd rather not work -- before the economic collapse, she said, she did work two jobs in Florida. "I was a customer service warranty specialist for a company that manufacturers luxury coaches -- tour buses, fancy ones," she said, adding that she also worked as a real estate agent. After losing the customer service job, she moved from Florida to New York to stay with her daughter.

She said she spent $2.25 on subway fare to get to the protest and is constantly looking for a job. "I just want an honest day's work... I've tried everything you can imagine," she said. As for Beck's suggestion that his viewers might be ashamed to call 99ers American, Kaplan said, "You couldn't get more American than me. I'm the daughter of an immigrant and I grew up in Brooklyn."

Indeed, for more than a year Beck has been portraying the progressive organization as a central player in a larger, nefarious cabal of Marxist/socialist/Nazi Obama-loving outlets determined to destroy democracy in America. Michele Bachmann Sells Herself to Raise Money for Glenn Beck

One of the many ways that Glenn Beck is raising money to pay for his upcoming rally at the Lincoln Memorial is an online auction. People are bidding big bucks on items such as breakfast with Beck and Sarah Palin on the morning of the rally, and a helicopter ride to visit Beck at his home. But one auction item that hasn't gotten any attention at all is the private tour of the Capitol Building with Christian nationalist pseudo-historian David Barton and everyone's favorite tea party congresswoman, Michele Bachmann. As the bidding on this item came to a close on Monday, the high bid was at $27,500.

Beck's 8/28 "Restoring Honor" rally is being promoted as a benefit for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF), a legitimate charity that provides scholarships to the children of special operations military personnel who are killed in action or training missions, and financial assistance to the families of those who are severely wounded. But, as Bill Press explained a few weeks ago on Countdown with Keith Olbermann, in addition to the outrage of Beck holding his rally at the Lincoln Memorial on the anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech, the donations being solicited by Beck for this benefit aren't all actually going to the SOWF. So, call me crazy, but I'm beginning to think that Fox News infotainer Glenn Beck's principles lack some internal moral consistency.

See, a couple of days ago, Beck interviewed sometime-Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, and he took what appeared to be a principled stand on the matter of how people should treat the families of public figures. Speaking with Palin, Beck decried the tactic: "Leave my family, leave people's families alone...When it was Bill Clinton, you don't go after Chelsea Clinton. You don't talk about the Bush kids. Now, the minute they get into politics, that's a different story. You leave the families alone."

Now, Beck's stand here was rooted in the belief that Sarah Palin's new neighbor, journalist Joe McGinnis, moved in next door to her with the intention of being a danger to Palin's children. That is, as they say, some horsedung. Nevertheless, I can definitely get on board with the whole "leave the families alone" idea. Glenn Beck has had a long time to reflect upon that time he mocked a woman's miscarriage because her husband committed the terrible crime of being the host of a rival morning show in the same market as Beck. Maybe he felt bad about that! But whatever the reason, decrying the practice of criticizing the families of public figures is, at the root, very laudable.

Here's the thing, though: Beck was only able to abide by those principles for a few hours. On this morning's broadcast of his radio show, he chucked all of that out the window and went on an extended jag of mocking Malia Obama, who had the temerity to get herself caught up in the news cycle:

In discussing how President Obama uses children to shield himself from criticism, I broke my own rule about leaving kids out of political debates. The children of public figures should be left on the sidelines. It was a stupid mistake and I apologize--and as a dad I should have known better.

I think that was the right thing to do under the circumstances.

So, to revise the central tenets of Beck's "leave the families alone" credo, people should only criticize the children of public figures of people whom Glenn Beck doesn't like, including the ones who are stillborn.

Prominent right-wing voices decided last year that the U.S. census was not to be trusted. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) said the process could lead to "internment camps." Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) called the census "invasive." Fox News' Glenn Beck's suggested Americans may not be comfortable with "ACORN members" collecting information. Radio host Neal Boortz said some census information is "designed to help the government steal from you in order to pass off your property to the moochers."
